What is a scar?
A Scar is a result of our skins defence system. If the skin is compromised by a laceration, burning or picking, its defence mechanism is to begin forming new cells. Scars occur when new cells develop too fast or too slow.
What impacts on the severity of the scar?
Some variables that effect the severity of the scar include:
Size and depth of the wound
Blood supply to scar area
Thickness and colour of skin
How can you prevent scarring?
You can help prevent scarring by using good topical creams during the healing stage.
Why can scars go lumpy?
When the skin is wounded tissue breaks which will cause collagen to be released to help repair the wound. New collagen will continue to be formed up to several months after. There will be an increase in the blood supply if the skin is producing too much collagen, which causes the scar to become red, raised and lumpy.
How long would it take to remove my scar?
Scar reduction is a long term project, so patience and commitment are necessary to get desired results.
